Tracking Progress

Status updates, progress tracking, and adding comments to targets.

Setting a target is only the beginning. Regular progress tracking is what turns a goal into an achievement. This guide covers how to keep targets up to date and use progress data effectively.

Status Updates

Each target has a status that reflects its current state:

Not Started

The target has been set but work has not begun.

In Progress

Active work is underway towards the goal.

At Risk

The target is in danger of being missed.

Complete

The goal has been achieved.

Update the status as circumstances change. Moving a target from "not started" to "in progress" signals that work has begun. Flagging a target as "at risk" early gives you time to intervene before the due date passes.

Adding Comments

You can add comments to a target to record updates, notes, or context. Comments create a timeline of progress that is invaluable during performance reviews and development conversations.

Good comments include:

  • Progress milestones ("Completed the first draft of the training materials")
  • Blockers ("Waiting on access to the staging environment")
  • Changes in approach ("Decided to focus on the top three clients rather than all ten")
  • Check-in notes ("Discussed progress in this week's catchup, on track for completion")

Using Targets in Catchups

Active targets are natural conversation starters during one-to-one catchups. Before meeting with a team member, review their open targets to see what is in progress, what might be at risk, and what has been completed since your last conversation.

This ensures your catchups are focused and productive rather than generic. It also shows your team member that you are paying attention to their development.

Reviewing Progress Over Time

The targets view shows all active and completed targets, which you can filter by team member or status. Reviewing completed targets periodically helps you recognise achievement and provides evidence for performance reviews.

If a target has been "in progress" for a long time without updates, it may need attention. Either the target is too large and should be broken into smaller goals, or progress has stalled and needs discussion.

Update target status at least weekly. Use the "at risk" status proactively - early warning is always better than a missed deadline. Add brief comments after each relevant catchup to maintain a clear progress record, and celebrate completed targets to reinforce the behaviour you want to see.
